Overpronation is the most common biomechanical foot problem. Normal pronation or turning inward of the foot is necessary as the foot adapts to the ground, absorbing the shock from impact and transferring the bodies weight through the walking cycle.

In overpronation, the arch in a sense flattens or collapses and soft tissue stretches beyond their limits. With overpronation, joint surfaces must function at unnatural angles and become loose and flexible rather than stable. Sometimes other compensations occur to accommodate pronation creating problems in those areas.

Overpronation can often be associated with the following ailments:

  • plantar fasciitis
  • stress fractures
  • shin splints
  • back problems
  • knee problems
  • hip problems
  • sesamoiditis and other types of tendonitis.
